A VICIOUS CYCLE

SLEEP LOSS, STRESS AND
CHRONIC PAIN

Lack of sleep or stress can both result in chronic pain, even in the absence of structural or tissue damage.

When stress occurs, blood flow is directed to the emotional “fight or flight” part of the brain and away from other parts of the brain and body. When prolonged, this can be problematic for normal body functioning.

Stress can create difficulty falling asleep. Lack of sleep causes a boost in stress hormones and can also impair proper body functioning. If deep sleep is not achieved, the stress hormones continue to be produced. This makes it harder to fall asleep.

Sleep deprivation can:

  • Lead to release of chemicals that increase pain sensation
  • Deplete the immune system, which limits the body’s healing response
  • Contribute to chronic inflammation, which can subsequently lead to pain
  • Increase the risk of mood disorders like depression, which can reduce ability to cope with pain
  • Predict the onset or intensity of pain the day after poor sleep occurs
  • Minimize the effectiveness of pain medication

5 ways that sleep helps the body to heal:

  • Supports proper immune function
  • Gives the body and brain a break
  • Flushes toxins
  • Provides an energy boost
  • Helps with positive attitude
